Saphymo

Operational Army Radiation Detector (DORA)

Need

Human Design Group is working with Saphymo as a human factors engineering expert on the design of the Détecteur Opérationnel de Radiation des Armées (DORA).

As part of the production of the new operational radiameter for the armed forces, Saphymo, the programme's industrial prime contractor, has to implement a process of’human factors engineering allowing :

  • ensure that operational requirements are taken into account and that human factors are integrated into the DORA project;
  • master the ergonomic requirements of the DGA's specifications: requirements relating to the ergonomics of the product and user interfaces;
  • to define an easy-to-use, aesthetically pleasing radiameter capable of meeting the needs of the armed forces, integrating ergonomic and manufacturing requirements in a coherent way and representing Saphymo's brand image on the defence and civilian markets.

Intervention

Bertin Ergonomie took on the management of the process human factors engineering through the definition of the DORA Human Factors Integration Plan, required by the DGA, and the management of ergonomics and product design studies:

  • Analysis of activities and interviews with forces to characterise the environment and current methods of use of operational products;
  • Identification of the future context in which the product will be used and creation of a standard ergonomic reference framework applicable to the new radiameter;
  • Product design and HMI ergonomics studies: concept drafts, product design synthesis (including materials and mechanics), HMI mock-ups (Balsamiq Mockups and Axure); ;
  • Leading User Working Groups to validate ergonomics and product design in relation to operational use situations; ;
  • User testing on volume mock-ups (design and physical HMI) and tablets (software HMI) to validate ergonomics in real-life situations; ;
  • Final qualification of ergonomic requirements on prototype ;
  • Follow-up of requirements and recommendations from users and DGA under the’human factors engineering

Results

  • Setting up and managing a process factor engineering humans throughout the product design and production cycle, from the business analysis phase to the system validation phase;
  • Supply of the DORA ergonomics and product design specification files and supporting documentation;
  • Production of a radiameter in line with operational requirements, approved and validated by the forces.
