EDF-CIPN

Ergonomics of new user interfaces

Need

As part of the VD3 1300 MW programme, Human design Group is helping EDF-CIPN to modernise the HMI of the supervision system by specifying the ergonomics of the new user interfaces.

Given the challenges associated with the impact of modernisation on operators' activities, EDF-CIPN wanted to include a human factor approach in the VD3 1300 project, focusing on expertise and validation of the ergonomics of the user interfaces of the new control supervision system for 1300 MW units.

Intervention

As part of this assignment, Human Design Group provided assistance to EDF-CIPN in specifying and evaluating the ergonomics of the supervision system's user interfaces using the following approach:

  • Immersion in the driving activity of 1300 MW operators by carrying out activity analyses in the control room;
  • Implementation of an expert analysis and a user test to evaluate the ergonomics of the user interfaces of the current supervision system;
  • Leading user workgroups to iterate and validate GUI solutions;
  • Definition of the ergonomics of the new system's user interfaces: imagery, navigation and control methods, principles for presenting information and implementing functions, graphic representation of the symbols in the synoptics;
  • Evaluation and validation of new solutions through user trials on HMI prototypes: evaluation protocol, transmission and processing of results;
  • Assisting with the formalisation and drafting of requirements relating to the ergonomics of user interfaces in the SICP specifications drawn up by the EDF-CIPN engineering teams, as well as the drafting of procedures for integrating a human factor approach during the system design and production phase;
  • Integrated« intervention in the EDF-CIPN engineering teams.

Results

  • Specification of a new supervision system with modernised HMI ergonomics, validated by the driving operators;
  • Production, in collaboration with EDF-CIPN, of specifications incorporating ergonomic requirements for user interfaces and methodological requirements for taking human factors into account during the system development phases.
