Ergonomics of an automotive cockpit

Need

Human design Group, responsible for managing PSA's vehicle ergonomics expertise and services centre

PSA has entrusted Human design Group with the creation and management of a centre of expertise and services dedicated to the ergonomics of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) in the vehicle cockpit. The team currently comprises 20 ergonomics experts, divided between the ergonomics innovation centre and the development centre (automotive projects). Collaboration extends to :

  • Drafting design guidelines.
  • Evaluating the ergonomics of cockpits and modules that will be integrated into vehicles by 2015-2020.
  • Ergonomics studies for the «Prove Of Concept» of innovative on-board systems (autonomous vehicles, new interaction technologies, etc.).

Intervention

The ergonomics of car cockpits are an important factor in both driving safety and the appeal and innovation of the brand's vehicles.

Together with PSA's project and innovation teams, the Human Design Group is responsible for defining and implementing «user-centred» design approaches and methodologies for driving.

For example, in the field of assessing the ergonomics of automotive projects, we have mastered and implemented :

  • Card sorting, user testing, expert analysis, implementation of benchmarks for evaluating methods in HMI ergonomics, MirrorLink application construction certification, etc.

In the field of automotive ergonomic innovation, we can cite the following examples:

  • Leading and taking part in design workshops (design thinking), mock-ups, drafting protocols and ergonomic assessments of the various solutions envisaged ...

Results

  • The implementation of a process combining ergonomics and innovation that brings together the points of view and experience of everyone involved, in particular during design (brainstorming, participative modelling) and evaluation sessions. This process stimulates creativity and leads to innovative ergonomic solutions that are both appropriate to driving needs and technically feasible.
  • Automotive cockpit ergonomics solutions that meet user requirements in terms of both driving safety and the attractiveness and innovation of the brand's vehicles.
