Specifying the ergonomics of computer application HMIs

Need

Human Design Group is providing RATP with its expertise in IT application ergonomics for the HMI specification of SYMPHONIE's business applications.

As part of the development of the SYMPHONIE system (Système de Modernisation Pour Harmoniser les Opérations Nouvelles d'Informatisation des Équipements en Station), RATP wanted to include a study of the impact of the new computerisation system on station equipment.’ergonomics of IT applications to provide operators with modern, easy-to-use tools:

  • For the Operations Support System (OSS): optimising the ergonomics and graphics of the existing HMI by upgrading the public address and passenger information functions in stations;
  • For equipment maintenance: specify a new tool, the OGC (Configuration Management Tool), simplifying the activity of maintainers by offering them a user-friendly interface.

Intervention

Human Design Group acted as experts in ergonomics of IT applications to specify the ergonomics and graphics of the man-machine interfaces for the public address function of the SAE SYMPHONIE supervisor and the OGC tool:

  • Analysis of use cases for the Public Address function and diagnosis of existing ergonomic problems through observation of the activity of RATP agents on line 11;
  • Study of the Functional Requirement Expression for the two tools; ;
  • Definition of HMI solutions using a participative and iterative approach involving users, technical teams and the contracting authority (co-design workshops); ;
  • Specification of HMI ergonomics and graphics (ergonomics charter, graphic charter, HMI storyboards);
  • Production of a semi-dynamic model illustrating the solutions based on usage scenarios.

Results

  • Supply of specification documents for the ergonomics and graphics of computer applications SYMPHONIE to support the RATP's specifications for the creation and development of the system; ;
  • Delivery of a semi-dynamic html model for the Configuration Management Tool to facilitate communication and change management with maintainers; ;
  • Implementation of HMI tools adapted to users' actual activity and validated through the participative approach.
