Human Factors Assessment «Train Tracking System»

Need

Evaluation of the Organisational and Human Factor impact of the SNCF's «train monitoring system

The implementation of complex socio-technical systems (such as the SNCF's train monitoring system) requires mastery of the operating safety of the technologies used as well as mastery of the safety of the systems themselves. human reliability interventions by system operators.

Safety obligations require a demonstration of the gains in human reliability and hardware changes to the system.

Intervention

  • To define, as part of an original assessment approach involving specialists in operating safety and human factors, a method for assessing the human reliability of the system, taking into account its procedures and the organisational conditions under which the work equipment is used.
  • Carrying out field analyses based on observation of the actual (or simulated) activity of the operators in charge of rail regulation to produce a hierarchical analysis of the human error related to human factors.
  • Integrate the results of human reliability diagnostics (vs. human error) into the safety system approach; in particular in the construction of fault trees established for each of the feared events in the train monitoring system.

Results

  • Proposal and validation of a system approach to safety assessment combining operational safety and human reliability and organisational aspects of the system.
  • Drawing up joint recommendations on operational safety and human factors for the validation/improvement of the socio-technical system concerned.
