HMI ergonomics of the navigation system on the Barracuda submarine

Need

Human Design Group is contributing its expertise in user interface ergonomics to the HMI specification for the Barracuda submarine's navigation system.

Integrate a’ergonomics of user interfaces for the design and production of the navigation system for the Barracuda submarine;

Validating usability choices with operational staff through user workgroups and contractual evaluations.

Intervention

Human Design Group helped DCNS to define a the ergonomics of user interfaces of the navigation system by implementing an iterative and participative design process involving future users and system designers:

  • Study of operators' needs (operational requirements) and analysis of the technical and functional requirements of the Barracuda's Navigation system; ;
  • Modelling of HMI views in the form of static mock-ups to illustrate the ergonomic and functional rendering of screens; ;
  • Specification ergonomics of user interfaces and justification of design choices ;
  • Dynamic illustration of the use of user interfaces based on operational scenarios.

Results

  • Supply of static mock-ups of the various views (MS Visio) with their different display definitions and brightness modes (day/night);
  • General specification document for the’ergonomics of user interfaces describing how information and orders are presented and how they interact;
  • Animation of views illustrating the principle of operating software HMIs and simulating scenarios of use representative of the activity of operational staff;
  • File justifying and tracing design choices for the ergonomics of user interfaces.
