With the participation of AIRBUS, ORANGE, INRIA and RESACT, Bertin Ergonomie delivered a keynote speech at this conference on innovation and the role of ergonomics in the design of complex systems. The general idea behind this keynote speech (and to paraphrase Edgar Morin – *The Ethical Method*, 2004) is to demonstrate how ergonomics and human factors, whilst the essential may be sacrificed in the rush to meet project deadlines, ensure that we do not lose sight of the urgency of the essential (in this case, the human element within the system).
