PCC Ergonomics for the Line 13 Migration Project

A planning challenge in a constrained environment

As part of the project to introduce automated shuttles on Line 13, work has begun on upgrading the existing Central Control Centre (CCC). The RATP sought the expertise of Human Design Group: the main challenge was to design the layout of the temporary Centralised Control Centre (PCC), a transitional yet critical piece of infrastructure to be used whilst work is carried out on the main PCC.

The challenge

How can we align the various stakeholders (construction, operator, IT, project) and incorporate strict standardised ergonomic requirements into a confined space measuring just 100 m² ? To address this complex issue, Human Design Group has rolled out its Three Diamonds model, ensuring a solution that is both desirable for operators and technically viable.

1. Research & Analysis (The First Diamond)
  • Business analysis : Immersion to understand operators’ existing needs and practices.
  • RETEX : Drawing on past experience to anticipate potential issues.
  • Objective : Exploring the range of possibilities to define ergonomic requirements that reflect the reality on the ground.
2. Iterative Design (The second diamond)
  • Multidisciplinary team : Involvement of ergonomics specialists (PhD), architects and VR engineers.
  • Prototyping : Creation of plans, cross-sections and 3D models of control rooms and control consoles.
  • User Focus : Design focused on the social acceptability, functionality and ergonomics of spaces.
3. Assessment & Immersion (The third diamond)
  • Virtual Reality (VR) Simulation : Using the VR platform to enable future operators to immerse themselves in their future workspace even before it is built.
  • Objectification : Feasibility testing and validation of dimensions to ensure regulatory compliance and future adoption.

This collaboration has resulted in the delivery of a comprehensive fit-out solution that meets the rail industry’s most stringent requirements.

  • Optimised layout : Successful integration of all critical functions within a limited space.
  • Recognised expertise : A project that builds on Human Design Group’s expertise in the modernisation of driver’s cabs, following on from its work on Lines 6, 7/7bis, 9, 10 and 14.

Key deliverables

  • Formulation of user requirements and the application of ergonomic requirements
  • Sketches of the rooms and dimensions of the video walls, including the initial proposals for desks
  • Finalised design and detailed working drawings trainers’ and trainees’ desks
  • Assessment grid manufactured desks, facilitating quality control upon delivery
