Optimising the performance of filter inspection using eye-tracking

The ADP Group (Aéroports de Paris) places safety and security at the heart of its development strategy. Against a backdrop of rising passenger numbers, the challenge is to maintain its position as a European leader by incorporating the latest advances in human factors into security screening.

Balancing vigilance, hit rate and fluidity

The aim is to provide practical insights into two key areas:

  • Improving the detection rates (hit rates) of illicit items.
  • The objective determination of shift lengths for imaging posts to prevent cognitive fatigue.
  • Understanding the factors that influence activity in order to identify the most effective visual strategies.

Human Data Science in real-world conditions

Under the auspices of our research laboratory CRIHS (Centre for Human-System Research and Innovation), we have implemented a methodology structured in three phases:

  1. Inductive Phase : Literature review, definition of data collection hypotheses and ensuring that stakeholders are in agreement with the experimental protocols.

  2. Deductive Phase : In vivo data collection using portable eye-tracking devices from 25 participants divided between conventional and multiplexed workstations (Cabin and Hold).

  3. Cross-tabulation : Correlation between oculometric metrics and actual operational performance to validate a model of optimal performance.

Actionable recommendations for security

The study provided objective performance indicators and decision-making tools:

  • Modelling optimal performance based on the operators’ moments of attention and inattention.
  • Comparison: expert vs novice to refine initial and continuing training processes.
  • Ergonomic recommendations on the development of work interfaces and the management of shift lengths to reduce monotony.
