Controlling arduous work

Case Study

Controlling arduous work

Against a backdrop of a statutory extension to the length of working life and a decline in the appeal of airport-related careers since the health crisis, Managing and anticipating issues relating to the arduous nature of the work and career progression appear to be all the more crucial challenges. The challenge facing many airport operators today is to ensure retaining their staff by rethinking working conditions, career development and measures to manage the physical demands of the job.

How can we support organisations in balancing operational performance, health and safety at work, and sustainable career paths?

Intervention

The proposed approach is divided into three stages:

  • Objective analysis of working conditions: review of existing indicators, targeted interviews and field observations to identify the main factors contributing to the arduous nature of the work.
  • Facilitating multidisciplinary working groups with stakeholders to jointly develop an operational action plan and a system for assessing and monitoring constraints.
  • HR workshops focused on defining and mapping out sustainable career paths, taking into account job requirements, skills, health and long-term development.

This approach aims to inform decision-making and bring about structural change to enhance the sustainability of work.

Actionable results

  • Factors identified as contributing to the arduous nature of the work, objectified and prioritised to enable informed decision-making
  • Structured action plan, developed in collaboration with frontline teams, HR and employee representative bodies
  • Tool for monitoring and assessing constraints enabling the sustainable management of working conditions
  • Clearer career paths, tailored to the realities on the ground and the challenges of retaining people in work
